Hosting any event in the spring means embracing the undeniable charm of pastel color palettes, alfresco settings, and overflowing florals. Put all of these elements together and you get a tablescape display that can only mean that warm weather is upon us. For all things in-bloom, we reached out to the experts on everything needed to construct a seasonal, spring tablescape that’s worthy of any celebration.
Keep your palette clean.
“The original plan for this tablescape was to be a minimal and classic design,” says Kait Rovnyak, Event Producer at AaB Creates, who used all-white chairs and linens to achieve a look of understated luxury. Build upon your white palette with matching floral vessels & china in a matte white for a minimalist look. “This allows the floral to come through, which is what we wanted to focus on,” Rovnyak adds.
Dye your napkins.
“Warm pastel tones that welcome the longer, and awakening, days of spring bring about an inviting touch to a seasonal tablescape,” says Alicia Fritz, Founder of A Day in May Events. “For added interest and depth, consider adding a colorful napkin in a coordinating floral color,” Fritz adds. This embroidered napkin added an elevated touch to this romantic spring table setting.
Consider a vibrant pop of red.
Spring often conjures images of pastels, but red can be just as powerful and less expected than its softer color counterparts. “Balance deeper hues (which can read more autumnal if overused) with bright tones and be intentional about what elements of the table incorporate this bold color,” says Cassy Anderson, Owner of Cassy Rose Events. Delicate blooms and custom watercolor details highlighted this reception’s bold colors—a whimsical white table runner helped to make them pop.
Strategize natural lighting.
There’s nothing better than a colorful spring tablescape filled with glorious, glowing natural light. “Al fresco dining is not only photogenic, but experientially special for wedding guests,” says Erich McVey, Owner of Erich McVey. “I want to get the best images possible for my clients, which requires great planning and timing, and ensuring I’m able to shoot carefully crafted reception details like these at a time when I have soft, beautiful, natural light,” McVey adds.
Gather your best vintage pieces.
“Bring the outdoors into a spring table with vintage urns filled with herbs and garden roses in soft pastel shades of peach, blush, and ivory,” says Dani Blasena, Owner of HauteFêtes Fine Weddings & Events. “This spring table setting is soft and feminine, with hemstitched napkins wrapped in vines and vintage tea plates that look beautiful against the cut crystal stemware,” Blasena adds. To add some elegance, don’t forget to incorporate taper candles.
Highlight low and green.
Spring means abundant blooms and the regrowth of all things green. “It’s a season filled with vibrancy, so run with it!” advises Chelsea Moe, Sales Manager at Pippin Hill Farm and Vineyards. Take advantage of all the fresh greenery by adding a floral runner to your head table. “This keeps the table decor elegant and colorful, but low enough guests can still see across the table and chat unobstructed,” Moe adds.
Play with your flatware.
“This classic, traditional, almost royal setting is an example of using shine strategically,” says Graham Ervin, Director of Sales at The Cedar Room, who emphasizes the importance of your flatware choice when finalizing last-minute tablescape details. “When paired with a neutral background, the metallics pop, but don’t steal the show,” Ervin adds.
Pair wood with your presentation.
For an unexpected tabletop texture, consider utilizing wood accents. “In spring and summer, we are able to produce events alfresco, so we can weave in the elements found within nature,” says Tracy Taylor Ward, Owner of Tracy Taylor Ward Design. “For this beautiful dinner party, we custom built walnut stained flower boxes and filled them with mango and amber colored freesia and double tulips, for a playful pop of color to complement that warmth of the wood tones,” she adds.
Lean into an assortment of bold hues.
“To me, spring is synonymous with color,” says Beth Bernstein, Owner of SQN Events, adding, “create a dynamic tablescape by using multiple monochromatic and monobotanic arrangements in vessels of varying heights and sizes.” Keeping the other elements neutral, such as using a light linens and Lucite chairs, will really make the colors pop.
Opt for colored glassware.
Adding a pop of color with your glassware is both a playful and elegant addition to any spring tablescape. “A fun twist on classic black and white—the green accent glass brings a colorful touch to this wedding tabletop design perfectly tying in the natural green in the flowers,” says Laura Remmert, Owner of Laura Remmert Events.
Go with centerpieces of loose, delicate blooms.
“We absolutely love spring flowers!” says Yumiko Fletcher, Owner of Hana Floral Design. “There are so many flower varieties that are only available during the spring months,” Fletcher adds. When constructing arrangements for a seasonal table, opt for soft colors and delicate blooms for loose and organic centerpieces. Consider all-green centerpieces for even more of a natural feel.
Utilize your outdoor space.
Spring brings some of the most delightful weather of the entire year, so planning your event outside can really help to tie in the charm of the season. “This couple blended opulence with the outdoors thanks to a hanging chandelier, a floral installation, and a centerpiece table-runner,” says Caroline Montondon, Wedding and Social Sales Manager at the Four Seasons Resorts Lana’i. Decorative details like these can enhance any outdoor space.
Incorporate nods to your location.
“Incorporate fresh, local produce into your tablescape to give a more cohesive feeling between your location, menu, and décor,” says Danielle Dworkowitz, Owner of Creative Touch Party Design. Take elements from your local market and bring them into your tablescape. “Find inspiration from the seasonal landscape and menu to highlight a bit of spring freshness in your table décor,” Dworkowitz adds.
Embrace local, seasonal blooms.
“Educate yourself (or ask your florist/planner) about floral blooming times,” advises Stephanie Cole, Co-founder at Cole Drake Events. “Spring is arguably the best time for florals, and many favorites are found this time of year: peonies, lily of the valley, ranunculus, to name a few,” Cole adds emphasizing the use of local, seasonal blooms on your tablescape. Don’t forget to carry those florals over to your bouquet and boutonniere.
Consider all-out contemporary.
When setting a spring tablescape, don’t be afraid to stray from a traditional pastel color palette and set a neutral base, with light grey or ivory linen and ceramics. “Take advantage of spring flowers and incorporate bloom-heavy arrangements with minimal greenery,” says Callista Osborn, Owner of Callista & Company. Stemless glassware adds a contemporary touch, and egg cups for each guest offer a sense of seasonality.
Work with blush.
When crafting a spring tablescape, keep your color palette soft and romantic. “By blending shades of blush and champagne we were able to complement the venue setting and also the season,” says Jennifer Haf, Owner of Bloom Floral Design. A tablerunner made of soft fabric translated the romantic feeling throughout the entirety of the table.
Scope out a neutral venue.
“The neutral palette of the ballrooms at Four Seasons Resort Orlando makes it easy to decorate for a spring setting,” said Laure Hitzig Clavette, Director of Catering for Four Seasons Resort Orlando. “With all aspects, from the table setting to the menu and the decor, you can incorporate the season,” she adds. Don’t be afraid to play up the elegance of your ballroom setting when crafting a spring presentation.
Embrace colored candlesticks.
“A fun and unique way to add color to your spring tablescape—with the exception of blooms—is to play with candlestick shades,” says Caroline Mazzone of The Revel Group. For this display, peach candles seamlessly matched the color scheme of the table’s chairs, florals, and flatware.
Arrange monobloom centerpieces.
“Spring to us means keeping it simple and showing off the natural blooms as they are,” says Christine Viola, Director of Events for Exquisite Affairs Productions Inc. Sometimes, having monochromatic and monoblooms in an arrangement is the quintessential spring ‘freshness’ a wedding tablescape needs.
Elevate your blooms with installations.
Take spring from the tablescape to an elevated installation. “Create a springtime secret garden atmosphere with romantic hanging florals over dining tables using soft pinks and whites,” says Becca Knuth, Managing Partner and Wedding Planner at Asheville Event Co.“Candles in mismatched vases can also help set the springtime mood,” Knuth adds.
Tower light centerpieces above your tablescape.
“These stunning arrangements by Belle Fleur featured a mix of pink and white flowers that evoked a fresh spring vibe into this iconic New York space,” says Danielle Elder, Owner of Classic Events. “Elevating the centerpieces gave each guest an unobstructed view across the table, but also created a conversation starter thanks to their romantic color palette,” Elder adds.
