- Chrissy Teigen and John Legend have been together for over a decade, and it’s clear their relationship is pretty goal-worthy.
- From their first meeting to their wedding to the birth of their adorable children— Luna, 3, and Miles, 1—Legend and Teigen are aspirational in every way.
- Here’s a timeline of their love story and how it all started.
Chrissy Teigen and John Legend have won over America’s heart, and for good reason: They are never shy about sharing their most supportive and loving moments online—and they never fail to ironically poke fun at each other.
As people on Instagram love to say, they truly define #RelationshipGoals, with Teigen even naming Legend the ultimate Instagram Husband. Model and Cravings author Teigen has been with the EGOT-winning singer, songwriter, actor, and The Voice judge for 12 years, and they have two children together: Luna, 3, and Miles, 1.
While we’ve seen many of their milestones celebrated on social media, it can be tough to keep it all straight. Here’s a timeline of their love story.
September 14, 2006: Teigen and Legend meet on the set of his “Stereo” music video.
It’s there that sparks between these two immediately developed. “We did the music video, we were together for like 12 hours,” Teigen told Wendy Williams in 2014. “We spent the entire day together, me in my underwear and him in a full suit, and I went to go say goodbye to him, to his hotel and we didn’t ever say goodbye that night.”
Teigen revealed to Cosmopolitan that the two went back to Legend’s hotel room after the shoot, ate In-N-Out burgers, and, uh, “hooked up.” She’s never been shy about the events of their first evening together, either:
2007: They actually break up.
After meeting on Legend’s set, they maintained their connection by texting and talking on the phone frequently, which is what ultimately got Legend really hooked. “I fell in love with her over the phone because she is good with those 140 characters,” Legend told Entertainment Tonight in 2016. “We were texting a lot, and I started to see her sense of humor. We would talk on the phone, and I started to fall in love with how engaging and witty and funny she is.”
Teigen also tried to keep it cool. She told Cosmopolitan, “I let him be himself for a while,” she said. “The worst thing you can do is try to lock someone like that down early on, then have them think, ‘There’s so much more out there.’ I played it cool for a long time. Never once did I ask, ‘What are we?'”
She added, “Marriage was never my goal, because I’ve never been very traditional. I was just happy to be with him.”
But their relationship didn’t flourish without its hurdles. At one point, Legend broke up with Teigen… for one day. “I was on tour with him and he’d gotten sick,” Teigen told Cosmopolitan in 2016. “He was feeling really bummed and stressed out. He was like, ‘I can’t be in a relationship right now.’ That lasted for one day. Literally, a day. I knew it came from a place other than us not working. It was the stress of him having to maybe cancel a show, and he had never been in a real relationship—or so he says now. I always joke, ‘Remember when you tried to break up with me?’ He’s like, ‘Yes, sorry. Big mistake.’” Big mistake, John. Huge.
Even Legend refutes the “one day” idea—it was less than a half hour, he told The Guardian in 2017. “I was just like: ‘I’d just be happier single right now,'” he said. “And she was like: ‘No.'”
2007: They take their first trip to Lake Como together.
In 2016, Teigen shared an image of the pair in Lake Como, Italy, a location that has a huge meaning in their relationship as it is the site of their wedding. In addition, it’s where they filmed Legend’s beloved “All of Me” music video, in which Teigen makes a cameo.
“A boat tour guide took us to a little spot on the lake and told us to make a wish,” Teigen shared on Instagram. “I asked for this to be the man I marry and have children with. I think John asked for the most perfect bite of cacio e pepe. Both came true, and here we are.”
February 10, 2008: They make their first red carpet appearance together.
They used the 2008 Grammys as the opportunity to make a splashy Hollywood debut. Later, Teigen poked fun at her spray tan from the occasion in a throwback Instagram.
December 2011: Legend proposes in the Maldives.
After four years of dating, Legend asked Teigen to marry him over the Christmas holiday in 2011 in the Maldives. But it definitely didn’t go as planned. For starters, Teigen was upset about the lack of abundance in the gifts she’d gotten for Christmas that year.
“I remember we got into a very big fight in the car on the way to the airport because we had opened our presents beforehand, and he had only gotten me a cookbook and a Crock-Pot,” Teigen said during an episode of FABLife that aired on the couple’s second wedding anniversary. “I remember him going, ‘You just wait!’ And I was like, ‘Wait for what?!'”
Then, airport security almost ruined the whole surprise. “[The ring] was in my carry-on bag going through airport security, and security wanted to look through my bag and they wanted to look in that particular box,” Legend later shared on Oprah’s Next Chapter. “And Chrissy was standing right next to me and I was, like, ‘Oh, my God. I’ve hid it so well this whole time. Now as we’re just about to get to the Maldives she’s going to find out I have a ring in this box and it’s going to ruin the surprise and I’ll have to get on my knees in the airport.’”
But it all worked out in the end, and from Teigen’s account, sounded just beautiful. “We get to the Maldives and he had planned this beautiful Christmas. He knows how much I love Christmas, and this waiter comes out with a silver dome for dessert. So he opens up the dome and a ton of arugula falls out and then I kind of fish in it, and I see the little box and then you know—your heart stops and you get so excited,” Teigen said. “There was no big grand speech or anything. I think it was just very lovely and sweet.”
September 10, 2013: They have a courthouse wedding.
Just days before their actual wedding ceremony in Italy, Legend and Teigen realized they needed to be married in America, first. “We actually got married after going to a couple Fashion Week shows at Vera Wang, ironically who actually did my dress, but we got married at the courthouse right after,” Teigen told E! News of the event, where model Irina Shayk served as a witness. “We are dumb and didn’t realize that our Italian wedding would not be recognized unless we had a real ceremony in New York City.”
September 14, 2013: Legend and Teigen get married, for real.
They tied the knot in—you guessed it—Lake Como, Italy, on September 14, 2013. Their ceremony was described by Legend to Martha Stewart Weddings as “rustic-chic, elegant-but-not-too-glossy,” sharing that their venue location came from their history. “One of the first vacations we took together was to Lake Como, so we thought it would be nice to marry where we fell in love,” he shared.
2013: They film Legend’s “All Of Me” music video.
One of Legend’s trademark songs, “All of Me,” is an emotional ballad expressing his love for Teigen, who stars in the video. As we mentioned earlier, it was shot in Lake Como and features many intimate black-and-white shots in addition to footage from their wedding day. Legend first premiered the song during a performance on Oprah’s Next Chapter with Teigen by his side.
Teigen later told the Huffington Post she knew immediately the song was about her. “The first line of it is, ‘What would I do without your smart mouth,’ so if that’s not about me I don’t know what is,” she said. But that didn’t make the song any less impactful. She later added, “I did cry when I heard it. I’m emotional, but like I don’t really don’t cry at things like that so yeah, it was beautiful. And live it’s pretty unreal.”
October 12, 2015: Teigen announces she’s pregnant.
Teigen, who previously opened up about her infertility struggles, announced on Instagram that she and Legend were welcoming their first child through IVF. The internet promptly freaked out.
April 14, 2016: Luna Simone Stephens is born!
Teigen and Legend welcomed daughter Luna Simone Stephens in the spring of 2016, with Teigen immediately sharing the news with some of her trademark humor on Twitter.
Teigen later penned an essay for Glamour about her struggles with postpartum depression after Luna’s birth, explaining how Legend’s support was key during that time. “I know he must look over at times and think: My God, get it together. But he has never made me feel that way,” she wrote. “I love John and Luna more than I can imagine loving anything, and John and I still hope to give Luna a few siblings. Postpartum hasn’t changed that.”
November 21, 2017: Teigen announces her second pregnancy—with Luna’s help.
Baby Luna was given the duty of announcing to the world that Legend and Teigen were expecting again in the world’s most precious Instagram video. Teigen also shared her second child, a baby boy, was also conceived through IVF.
May 17, 2018: Miles Theodore Stephens is born.
Teigen announced her son’s birth on Twitter, but several days passed until the world got its first look at Miles Theodore Stephens.
September 10, 2018: Legend becomes a Legend (literally).
On the fifth anniversary of their New York courthouse ceremony, Legend made history by becoming the first African American man ever to achieve EGOT status—meaning he has won an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony Award. Teigen took to Instagram to share her excitement and joy.
September 14, 2018: The couple celebrates five years of marriage.
In separate-but-equally-adorable Instagram posts, Teigen and Legend commemorated five years of marriage (and over 12 years together) with both love and some trademark snark:
#RelationshipGoals, for real.
