It’s the height of wedding season and as guests, we have a lot to do in order to get the happy couple down that aisle in style.
Watch two special people fall in love? Check. Attend engagement party and toast the occasion? Check. RSVP to beautiful wedding invitation and clear calendar to be there with bells on? Check.
The only thing left now is to buy a gift that sufficiently expresses our love for them, fulfills a need in their new lives, won’t end up in the back of a closet, doesn’t require a bank loan to purchase, and comes wrapped and ready to go. It’s a tall order but we want to get it right, so we went to the experts at The Shops of Provence for the lowdown on successful wedding gift giving.
Leslie and Hall Provence have been in the gift business for 15 years. Leslie says they originally opened Shops of Provence thinking of gifts and antiques, but quickly became aware that there was a need for a shop where brides could see a large selection of beautiful china, crystal and gifts from the practical to the fun all in one place.
“The most popular wedding gifts are those that can be used for entertaining. Brides now have so many choices to select china and other items that fit their personality and lifestyle. Some want an elegant, formal table setting, and some want something very casual. Often brides have inherited a china pattern and want to mix with a different pattern or add a charger to update and make it their own,” says Leslie.
“Trends have changed over the years and there are no rules about table settings. You can mix and match everything. There are now beautiful pieces that can be used for entertaining with ease. Melamine is big now with some fantastic serving pieces.”
We wondered what some of the other front runners are these days and were quickly directed to sheets and towels as well as a fun selection of lamps. The longer we looked, the more we wondered how a final decision is made. Brides once wouldn’t think of getting married without registering for their dream gifts, but what about these days?
“Brides still register and a surefire way to choose a gift the couple will love is to follow what they have chosen. We always make sure there is something there to fit every budget. If you do want to go off registry, that’s fine too. I always recommend that a customer select something that they love, and chances are the couple will love it too!”
Just in case you’re tempted to get too creative, remember the couple set up the registry for a reason, and if we stick to it, we can’t possibly buy a gift they won’t like.
